You can enjoy quick<br \/>\nvegetable soup from fresh or frozen vegetables.<br \/>\nI keep glass and ceramic dishes and mugs that<br \/>\nspecify &#8220;microwave safe.&#8221; For food safety, I avoid<br \/>\nplastic, and I&#8217;m still leary of silicone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>How It Works:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Basically, the magnetic field is like your cell phone,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">except that a microwave oven is fully shielded. You<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">should always stay at least a foot away when in use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Microwave ovens are kitchen appliances that<br \/>\nturn electricity into electromagnetic waves called<br \/>\nmicrowaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">These waves can stimulate molecules in food,<br \/>\nmaking them vibrate, spin around, and clash<br \/>\nwith each other \u2014 which turns the energy into<br \/>\nheat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">This is similar to how your hands heat up when<br \/>\nyou rub them together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Microwaves primarily affect water molecules but can<br \/>\nalso heat up\u00a0fats\u00a0and sugars \u2014 just to a lesser extent<br \/>\nthan\u00a0water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3520\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jmcutlery.com\/wiz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/vegetable-soup-300x296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jmcutlery.com\/wiz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/vegetable-soup-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jmcutlery.com\/wiz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/vegetable-soup-600x593.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.jmcutlery.com\/wiz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/vegetable-soup.jpg 661w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Every form of cooking reduces the nutrient value of food.<br \/>\nAccording to two reviews, microwaving does not<br \/>\nreduce nutrient value more than other cooking methods<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The main contributing factors are temperature, cooking<br \/>\ntime, and method. During boiling, water-soluble nutrients<br \/>\nmay leak out of the food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">As far as microwaves go, cooking times are generally<br \/>\nshort and the temperature low. Plus, <strong>the food is usually<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>not boiled.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">For this reason, you would expect microwave ovens to<br \/>\nretain more nutrients than methods like frying and boiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">One study on 20 different vegetables noted that <strong>microwaving<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and baking preserved antioxidants the best<\/strong>, while pressure<br \/>\ncooking and boiling did the worst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">However, one study found that just 1 minute of microwaving<br \/>\ndestroyed some of the cancer-fighting compounds in\u00a0garlic,<br \/>\nwhile this took 45 minutes in a conventional oven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Another study showed that microwaving destroyed 97%<br \/>\nof flavonoid\u00a0antioxidants\u00a0<strong>in broccoli,<\/strong> while boiling only<br \/>\ndestroyed 66%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">This study is often cited as evidence that microwaves<br \/>\ndegrade food. Yet, <strong>water was added<\/strong> to the microwaved<br \/>\nbroccoli, which is not recommended.
