Anyone could have passed<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">it right by in a newspaper column.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><br \/>\n<strong>I Turned It into &#8220;Gluten-Free&#8221;<\/strong> Tempura Batter For<br \/>\nVeggie-Seafood. If you like a stronger seafood flavor,<br \/>\nstir a teaspoon kelp powder into the batter. I<br \/>\nfigured it had to be <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">made of flour egg and leavening.<br \/>\nBut no batter recipe I read <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">sounded like it would<br \/>\nresult in that light, crispy, flaky shell. Well, I did it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><br \/>\nNext came: Batter-dipped Mushrooms, fish filets, eggplant,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Tofu, pre-softened Cauliflower, Broccoli, (kosher\/vegetarian<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">shrimp), Wow! What a hit!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We don&#8217;t eat fried food often. I had copied it and pasted this<br \/>\nrecipe into <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">all my cookbooks, (heaven-forbid I should<br \/>\nlose it). I <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">decided to post it here, though not typically a<br \/>\n&#8220;treat.&#8221; (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Same reason, not to lose it!) Of course I want<br \/>\nto share it <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">with everyone as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 24pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\nTempura Mock Seafood, Chicken<\/span><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">&#8220;2 lbs. whitefish&#8221;\u00a0 OR (any food I mentioned above)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">2\/3 cup oat flour<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">1\/3 cup tapioca<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">2 tsp. baking powder<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">1 tsp salt<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">1 egg separated\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">1\/2 a cup lukewarm water<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">1 tbs. melted coconut oil or avocado oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><br \/>\nOPTIONAL: Flavor the flour with 1-3 tbs. of<br \/>\nyour favorite seasoning. You may add some<br \/>\nkelp powder for a mild seafood flavor.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Cut food into serving pieces.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">and remeasure into another bowl, so it&#8217;s light<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">and fluffy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Drop a room-temperature egg yolk in the center.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Stir in water and oil and mix well. Batter should be\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">thin enough to create a thin even coating on the food. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">If it seems thick like muffin batter add warm water<br \/>\na tsp. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">at a time.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Beat the egg white until light and foamy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Fold in egg white in a lifting motion keeping the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">batter light.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Heat 1\/3 to 1\/2 cup avocado oil to 375\u00ba in a 10&#8243; <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">stainless steel pan (with a thickened bottom, which<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"> helps prevent burning).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">You do need to watch to maintain the temperature at about<br \/>\n375-F, use a stainless steel pan with a thick <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">reinforced bottom.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t crowd the pot. Fry quickly so the oil doesn&#8217;t burn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">You don&#8217;t need very deep oil. Just enough to almost cover<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">what you&#8217;re frying. And watch it. If the coating browns too<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">quickly, lower the heat a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Dip pieces, one-by-one, into the batter, and into the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">heated oil.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Don&#8217;t crowd the pan or they will reduce<br \/>\nthe oil temperature and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">they will come out soggy<br \/>\ninstead of crisp. Turn the pieces as they <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">become<br \/>\ngolden and remove, with a slotted spoon onto layers<br \/>\nof paper towel.
